At one end there is a short string with a blue and a yellow bead. At the other end there is a long string with a red and a green bead. If you pull up the red bead, the green one will naturally follow. The proof: these two beads are connected. If you let the red bead go, the green one will logically move downwards. But when the magician pulls the yellow bead upwards, the string on the other side becomes shorter, and the green bead moves upwards! When the magician eases his grip on the pull, the blue bead moves downwards. So are the yellow and green beads connected? That can't be right, because when the magician moves the yellow bead towards the rod, the blue bead moves downwards. So are yellow and blue connected after all? It gets even more confusing when the green bead is pulled down and, contrary to expectations, the blue bead moves up towards the rod. Somehow all the beads seem to be connected in some secret way after all. No sooner has this assumption been expressed than the conjurer pulls the rod apart in the middle and shows that there is no connection inside. The audience is confused, only to be bowled over immediately afterwards! Because when the stick is put back together, the game starts all over again! If the magician pulls on any pearl, sometimes the directly connected pearl moves, but other times one that is not connected at all!
